School ratings influence Bay Area home searches, but a single score compresses too much information into one number. A responsible comparison starts with the exact school assigned to the address, checks what the assessment measures, and adds context about programs, enrollment, access, and family fit.
What CAASPP scores actually measure
California's Smarter Balanced assessments and California Science Test report student performance in specific subjects and grades. The California Department of Education places results into achievement levels that describe performance relative to grade-level standards. The results are useful signals, but they are not a complete measure of teaching quality, school climate, special education support, enrichment, or the experience of an individual child.
Do not compare scores from different grades, subjects, years, or student groups as if they were one consistent index. Check the reporting year, tested population, participation, and whether the school serves a different grade configuration.
Verify the assigned school first
An address can be close to a highly rated school and still be assigned to another campus. Boundaries can also differ by grade, program, district, transfer policy, or year. Ask the district or school for the current assignment and verify whether the property is inside an attendance boundary, a lottery area, or an optional transfer zone.
Add the context a score leaves out
Use a short comparison sheet with:
- CAASPP results by subject, grade, and year.
- Enrollment, grade span, student groups, and participation context.
- School calendar, language programs, special education resources, and after-school options.
- Commute, drop-off, transit, and before/after-care logistics.
- Neighborhood crime, traffic safety, noise, and housing turnover.
The right school is not always the school with the highest headline score. A slightly lower-scoring school with the right program, commute, services, and community fit may be the better choice for a particular family.
